Movie makers need places to shoot their horrors and thrillers, so they use abandoned sites or build the sets from scratch, but what is left after the film crew leave can be a scary place to visit.

Session 9 (2001)

Session 9 was set and shot in a part of the abandoned psychiatric hospital in Danvers MA, Danvers State Hospital. Most parts of the hospital weren’t used for filming as they were deemed unsafe.

This building doesn’t exist anymore, since it was demolished in 2007. Here you can see the photos taken by urban explorers before demolition:

The Hills Have Eyes (2006)

On the highway near Ouarzazte, Morocco, you can get a glimpse of a spooky fake gas station used for the 2006 remake of the The Hills Have Eyes. It can bring back the fear of murderous mutant from the film.

28 Weeks Later (2007)

Some sets are so unique they were used in several movies like Death line (1972 horror), Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, Patriot Games, V for Vendetta, Sherlock. Also it’s where Andy and Tammy Harris hide in 28 Weeks Later, the sequel to 28 Days Later. The London Underground’s Aldwych tube station vas used even before it was closed down in 1994.

Deadgirl (2008)

Another real abandoned hospital, Linda Vista Community Hospital, especially draws in zombie and vampire genre. Zombie Strippers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and True Blood were filmed here, but also the hit show Dexter. This perfect setting for horror, is also rumored to be haunted, which gives it one more point to spookiness.

Jurassic World (2015)

As if fast, aggressive dinosaurs weren’t scary enough, the new Jurassic Park movie has the set to make it even more so. James Cameron has the Six Flags New Orleans at his disposal, which was closed after the Hurricane Katrina.
